Once upon a time, four young marine biologists decided to pursue their dreams & passions and set up a marine outpost right in the heart of the Coral Triangle.

When the project came to life in 2009, the original idea was to create a co-working outpost where universities and students could exchange ideas and develop their projects on tropical marine environments.

In 2013, following the construction of the diving center and lots of hard work, Coral Eye opened its doors to tourism as an alternative to mix science with passion and love for the sea. Through the new concept we were able to finance environmental projects, offer scholarships to students and better support local communities.

Marine Outpost

The idea behind Coral Eye was to create a meeting point for students, professors and researchers from different institutions, universities and regions. We envisioned a place where individuals could develop new ideas and insights, sharing and comparing results directly in the field. Our aim has always been to bring people together to deepen their understanding of this complex and fascinating underwater environment and empower them to devise solutions for the numerous threats and mounting stressors affecting the ecosystem. From this idea was born the concept of our Marine Outpost.

Coral Eye is the perfect place for organizing workshops, field courses, seminars, or as a base for developing your projects.

Architecture

Designed by Studio ARC.S Milano, the central structure was crafted to integrate with the surrounding environment.

The project has evolved slowly and naturally during two years of building, maintaining a constructive and human exchange between knowledge and techniques belonging to two different worlds whilst mutually learning from each other.

Together with a team of local artisans and local workers through a wise use of local materials and techniques we created a modern and avant-garde structure that offers guests the comfort they need without negatively affecting the surrounding environment. A respectful distance from the shore and the use of natural materials for the insulation of the roof make the structure almost invisible from the sea, minimizing its impact on the surrounding landscape.

Particular attention during the design phase was made to the use of air circulation to refresh the rooms. The conical roof covered with leaves, the separation of the cubes and the double cavities of the walls create a continuous circulation of fresh air.

Shipyard

Building boats is our passion. All our diving boats have been built handcrafted by local carpenters in our shipyard and have been designed to offer maximum comfort to scuba divers with an easy back-roll entry.

Sustainability

Since the opening, we have placed a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship. We prioritize sustainable practices that aim to minimize the negative environmental impact of our daily operations, supporting local communities while enhancing guest experiences.

Promoting
Single Line Fishing

We buy most of our fish from Bangka Island’s fishermen to ensure freshness, quality and sustainability: single-line fishing method is typically less destructive to marine habitats compared to other fishing techniques.

In addition to its environmental benefits, single-line fishing can also support local economies by providing livelihoods for small-scale fishermen and contributing to coastal communities' economic stability.

Fight Against
Plastic Pollution

Since 2018, we have proudly supported the No-Trash Triangle Initiative with one of our founders playing a crucial role in its establishment. Our goal is to keep the environment clean and to create an adaptable and sustainable waste management system on Bangka Island.

Save Bangka
from illegal mining

We are proud to be one of the founding members of BANGKA CONSERVATION FUND (BCF), created to fight illegal mining that has threatened Bangka since 2011. Back then the case seemed hopeless, but after many long years battling against corruption, mining was finally halted.
